

And it is in this public arena that the issue of ethical behaviour becomes increasingly significant since many lay readers do not have the skills to recognise a specious historical argument when they see it. Not only that but good history and bad history both tend to hit the headlines these days, apparently much more commonly than a generation or so ago. Unfortunately, as is the case in most human endeavour, whilst the vast majority of historians are good, a small number are bad, and some are very, very bad.
